A large number of equatorial sundials of this type, with a folding ring dial, a needle gnomon, and a plummet in a folding lattice support, were made by the many clockmakers of Augsburg, which was the centre of production at the time. The more standard items also represented in the Pilsen museum collections include sundials from the Augsburg workshops of brothers Andreas and Johann Georg Vogler. In contrast, the sundial crafted by Nicolaus Rugendas III (1665–1745) presents a more opulent, richly engraved design with relief work that was intended for more discerning customers.
